La vita sulle prime non sembra sorridergli, viene escluso dal Prix de Rome per l&#8217;ennesima volta, si infortuna per via di una distrazione, tuttavia fa incontri che segneranno la sua vita e la sua carriera, come quello con Ida Rubinstein, Marguerite Long, Misia Sert e anche con l&#8217;America, dove conosce il jazz.
